Help Us Restore Calvary After Hurricane Matthew
In October, 2016 Hurricane Matthew blew up the coast of east Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. It brought to Calvary Baptist Church what had not happened during the church’s 81 year history: ocean surge. It left behind a flooded church with a terrible stench, water logged carpet, walls, cabinets, furniture and materials/supplies.
The church had no money and no flood insurance. Flood waters had never come close to the church before. We were faced with an enormous challenge: First, we had to remove everything that was wet with surge water. None of it could be saved due to the bacterial count. The walls had to be cut above the water line and removed quickly to prevent terrible mold. All carpets and floor surfaces had to be stripped. Everything needed to be sterilized with an approved agent. The damaged touched several of our buildings.
When the initial preparation work was done, we prayed for wisdom as what we should and could do. It seemed clear to us that God did not want this storm to be the end of the church, so we committed ourselves to do everything we could to raise the funds to restore the church. The first clear estimate of the funds needed was just under $500,000.00. We reached out to everyone we could for help.
Over these fifteen months, God has sent us just over $300,000, much of it from our own members as well as other funds from friends and strangers.. We have restored the office complex, the fellowship hall, the ground floor of one education building, the church kitchen, the prayer room and the main hall connecting our buildings. We are currently working in the sanctuary with about 30% of the work done. We have some funds available, but still need $30,000.00 – $40,000.00 just to finish the sanctuary.
What will follow are Phase 3 and Phase 4 of the restoration. Phase 3 is work to be done on the interior of two education buildings and Phase 4 is work needed to restore the exterior of the building. God has been faithful and we know God has many sources to help us finish this restoration. We would appreciate your help. Any amount would be such a blessing to us, and we believe God will bless you in return.
The spirit of Calvary has never been higher. We are confident that God is not through with Calvary, quite the opposite. The best ministry ever is ahead for this congregation . Our testimony has been and is this: God is able to do abundantly more than we can ask or think, according to power of the Spirit that is operating in us. God is always able. His power is limitless. His purpose is great. His promises are true. His provision is perfect. Praise be to Him!!
